ni_quadra_hvsplus

The ni_quadra_hvsplus filter utilizes Quadra's internal AI engine to enhance video quality by mimicking the human visual system at the pre-processing stage before encoding. This process improves VMAF (Video Multi-Method Assessment Fusion) scores or mainly subjective quality.

warning

The maximum supported resolution for this filter is 4k (3840 x 2160).

Parameters

The following are the ni_quadra_hvsplus parameters:

devid

Specifies the Device ID of Quadra hardware to use when software frames are used as input. When a hardware frame is used, the filter will be collocated to the same device as the frame.

Supported Values0 to max device ID
Default0

type

Specifies the filter type. Two types are supported.

  • Type 0: Applies perceptual optimization to achieve balanced performance between PSNR and VMAF. Preserves PSNR and SSIM better than Type 1.
  • Type 1: Uses image‑enhancement models to improve subjective visual quality. This may reduce PSNR or SSIM significantly.
Supported ValuesInteger 0 and 1
Default0

level

The meaning of level depends on the filter type:

  • Type 0:
    • Level 1: Preserves PSNR more effectively while improving VMAF.
    • Level 2: More aggressively enhances VMAF.
  • Type 1:
    • Levels 1, 2 and 3: Apply increasingly aggressive enhancement for higher VMAF gains.
Supported Values- Type 0:
- 1 and 2
- Type 1:
- 1, 2 and 3
Default0

The following example shows how to use a hvsplus filter. The hvsplus filter performs preprocessing of the input frames in the AI engine and sends them to h264_ni_quadra_enc for encoding. It is using the default level of 2 and the default type of 0. To change the level to 1 and the type to 1, replace ‘ni_quadra_hvsplus’ with ‘ni_quadra_hvsplus=level=1:type=1’.

ffmpeg -y -i Football_1080p30.y4m -filter_complex '[0:v]ni_quadra_hvsplus,format=yuv420p' -c:v h264_ni_quadra_enc -xcoder-params "RcEnable=1:bitrate=2000000" -enc 0 test.mp4
